Helping South Florida Water Management District Remove Invasive Species

Cotleur & Hearing’s Rob Cotleur recently participated in a volunteer event organized by the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) to help remove the highly invasive Arrowhead Vine (Syngonium podophyllum) from the banks of the upper Loxahatchee River.

This important effort utilized a newly developed herbicide application technique created by the University of Florida. The approach is designed to target both the dense vines carpeting the forest floor and those climbing high into the Cypress tree canopy. Because of the aggressive nature of the Arrowhead Vine, multiple herbicide applications will be required to achieve effective long-term control.

Rob joined fellow volunteers and staff members from SFWMD, Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management (PBCERM), Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), the Village of Tequesta, and private companies such as Aquatic Vegetation Control (AVC). Together, they are working to preserve the health and biodiversity of this vital ecosystem.

Additional volunteer opportunities tied to this project—and others focused on invasive species control—will be announced in the future. Cotleur & Hearing is proud to contribute to protecting Florida’s natural resources through hands-on environmental stewardship.
