Lipstick Palm

Cyrtostachys Renda

The lipstick palm (Cyrtostachys renda), named for its vivid red crownshaft and leaf bases, is one of the most visually striking palms used in South Florida landscaping. Native to the rainforests of Southeast Asia, it thrives in tropical conditions with high humidity and consistent moisture, making it well-suited for the region’s warmer, wetter zones.

In landscape design, it’s often used as a dramatic focal point in luxury gardens, resort entrances, and around pools or water features, where its bold color contrasts beautifully with surrounding greenery.

While it is not native to Florida, the lipstick palm is non-invasive and valued purely for its ornamental appeal. It performs best in sheltered locations with rich, well-drained soil and ample irrigation, and should be protected from cold snaps, as it is sensitive to temperatures below 40°F. Though it requires a bit of maintenance and the right microclimate, its unique aesthetic makes it a standout addition to high-end tropical landscapes.
