Our Founders
Robert Cotleur and Donaldson Hearing have been practicing Landscape Architecture in South Florida for over 30 years. Both graduated with honors at the top of their respective classes and have won scholastic and professional awards in their field. In May 1991, they started the firm of Cotleur & Hearing Inc., focusing their expertise and energy on landscape architecture, land planning and the rapidly growing field of environmental design.

Robert J. Cotleur, PLA, ASLA

Rob is a seasoned landscape architect with over 40 years of experience specializing in transportation landscape architecture in South Florida. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture from Ohio State University in 1984, graduating cum laude and receiving the ASLA Academic Award of Excellence.
Since 1991, Rob has been a principal at Cotleur & Hearing, leading numerous FDOT District 4 transportation projects across Broward, Palm Beach, Martin, St. Lucie, and Indian River counties. His expertise spans landscape planning, design, environmental consulting, and construction administration. Over the past 25 years, his focus has been on transportation projects, which now account for over 95 percent of his work.
Recognized as an expert in transportation landscape architecture, Rob has played a pivotal role in developing Landscape Brand Guidelines for FDOT District 4 and the Turnpike. He has also contributed at the state level to enhance standard specifications, design manuals, and plan exhibits. His extensive design-build background includes work on tree disposition projects, such as tree relocation, preservation, pruning, and selective clearing and grubbing plans.
His portfolio includes the landscape design of high-profile roadways such as the I-95 gateway interchanges at I-595, Palm Beach Lakes, 45th Street, Blue Heron Boulevard, SR-706, CR-708, SR-76, SR-68, SR-70, and SR-60. He also designed the I-75/I-595 interchange in Broward County, the Indian Street Bridge and Jensen Beach Causeway in Martin County, and the entire 27-mile Polk Parkway in Polk County. Many of these projects had landscape budgets ranging from one million to six million dollars. Beyond FDOT, Rob has also designed projects for municipalities including Jupiter, Royal Palm Beach, West Palm Beach, Greenacres, Port St. Lucie, Delray Beach, Margate, and Highland Beach.
One of Rob’s notable projects is the I-75 (Alligator Alley) Environmental Education Project for FDOT District 4 at Mile Post 29 rest area in the Everglades. The site includes a wetland exhibit, arboretum, boardwalks, observation tower, plazas, passive park, educational signage, and a large alligator sculpture. Cotleur & Hearing designed the landscape features for the 12-million-dollar roadway project, along with the two-million-dollar stand-alone landscape project that followed. Construction began in the summer of 2021

Don Hearing is Owner and President of Cotleur & Hearing Land Planning and Landscape Architecture with over 30 years of experience in these disciplines. He has been practicing in South Florida since 1982. Don was raised in South Florida and is a state of Florida registered landscape architect. He is a honor graduate from the University of Florida with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree and a certified LEED Accredited Professional
In 2011, the American Institute of Architects recognized Don as Landscape Architect of the Year for Palm Beach County. In 2012, he was the recipient of the Community Leader of the Year Award presented by the Northern Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce. In 2023, Cotleur & Hearing was named one of the top Gator 100 Businesses by the University of Florida. In 2024, Don received the Distinguished Landscape Architect of the Year from the University of Florida, his alma mater.
Don also serves as managing partner of Cotleur & Hearing Investments, a real estate development and acquisition company.
Don served on the Board of Directors and Executive Committee for the Palm Beach North Chamber of Commerce and the Business Development Board of Palm Beach Co. He was the Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce in 2015. Don is a Director for the PGA Corridor Association, the Business Development Board, and serves on the Board for MyClinic. In the past, he has also served on the boards for The Lighthouse Center for the Arts and Jupiter Christian School.
In conjunction with his business interests, Don is actively involved in numerous charitable organizations which include Christ Fellowship Church, Jupiter Christian School, The Place of Hope and the West Jupiter Tutorial Center to name a few.
Don and his wife, Suzanne, reside in Jupiter. They have three daughters.

Erin Bolin is a senior level landscape architect and a partner with Cotleur & Hearing. Erin works on a variety of projects including high-end, residential design with a focus on pool, hardscape and landscape design. She is also involved with site and landscape planning for medium-size, residential communities and commercial projects. Ms. Bolin works in cooperation with the staff planner and principal landscape architect to ensure a positive outcome on every project. In addition to excellence in design, Erin places an emphasis on graphic ability, readability and rendering.

Nicole Plunkett, PLA, ASLA

While attending the University of Florida, Nicole interned with Cotleur & Hearing during the summer of 2008 and 2009, where she gained valuable experience within residential design. After graduating from the University of Florida in 2010, Nicole was hired at Cotleur & Hearing as a full time landscape architect and in 2019 became a partner in the company. She has experience working with multiple site and landscape plan submittals throughout Palm Beach County, representing projects throughout the public hearing process to gain approvals and code compliance. She has also been responsible for creating mapping and informational graphics within GIS for due diligence reports and environmental studies for a number of projects within South Florida. She works on a broad variety of projects throughout Palm Beach County and leads project teams from the very beginning of a project through final construction.
In 2017, Nicole was selected to participate in the 2017-2018 inaugural Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) Fellowship for Innovation + Leadership and awarded $25,000. During her Fellowship, she worked on the replication and scalability of Future Landscape Architects of America (FLAA), a non-profit organization founded by Nicole which focuses on educating K-12 students about the career field of landscape architecture. She was also honored with the 2017 Exceptional Emerging Professional Award by the American Society of Landscape Architects Florida Chapter (ASLA FL).

Aaron Wilbur began his career in 2009 at Cottage Gardens Inc, a residential design-build firm located in Gainesville, Florida. At Cottage Gardens, Aaron functioned as project manager and lead designer. Aaron received his first taste of streetscape design in 2012 when he was selected by the Gainesville Community Redevelopment Agency to design the landscape and hardscape for the 13th Street Medians adjacent to the University of Florida campus, which still stand today. In March of 2013, Aaron joined the Cotleur & Hearing team and quickly transitioned to the firm’s Transportation Division. Over the years, Aaron has developed expertise in FDOT project management, the FDOT phase submittal processes, and FDOT’s standards and specifications. His many years of experience working on FDOT projects, including the management of several In-House Support and Continuing Services contracts, have helped him successfully deliver numerous projects to FDOT on time and on budget. He has had the opportunity to manage all types of transportation landscape architecture projects, including roadway component projects, standalone landscape projects, and PD&E studies.
Aaron brings the ability to quickly adapt to new types of projects and challenges and is constantly pursuing new opportunities to grow the firm’s public sector portfolio. He is also an expert in the south Florida Nursery industry and has significant experience providing construction administration and post-design services.
In January 2019, Aaron joined Principals Robert Cotleur and Don Hearing as a Partner at the Firm providing continuity in management and ensuring the firm’s future success. He currently serves as the Transportation Manager overseeing all contracts and projects within CH’s Transportation Division. In 2025, he was elected to the role of co-president of the firm with Partner Nicole Plunkett and looks to carry on the legacy started by the founding Principals.

Leah Heinzelmann, PLA, ASLA

George Missimer graduated from Florida State University in 2017 with a bachelor’s degree in environment and society and a minor in biology. After graduation, George began working with Cotleur & Hearing as a planning technical under one of Cotleur & Hearing project managers. George assists on a variety of residential and commercial projects in Indian River County, St. Lucie County, Martin County and Palm Beach County. George grew up in Martin County and has strong ties to the community and has a desire to help influence the way South Florida develops in the future. Gregg Byrick brings 28 years of experience in Landscape Architecture, specializing in design, inspection, project management, and arboriculture. Since joining Cotleur & Hearing in 2020, Gregg has played a key role in landscape design, permitting, and inspection for a variety of high-profile projects. His expertise spans environmental permitting, tree mitigation, and sustainable landscape solutions for golf courses, residential communities, and commercial developments.
Gregg is a State of Florida Registered Landscape Architect, a Certified Landscape Inspector through the Landscape Inspectors Association of Florida (LIAF), and an ISA Certified Arborist. His extensive credentials reflect his deep understanding of landscape design, environmental regulations, and tree management, allowing him to oversee complex projects with precision and expertise.
He has contributed to a range of notable projects, including the redesign of the North Course at The Club at Quail Ridge, where he led landscape design, permitting, and the relocation of over 600 trees to create a sustainable golf course environment. He is part of the design team revitalizing two signature 18-hole golf courses at Boca West Golf and Country Club, enhancing course layout and facilities. His work at Wycliffe Country Club involves environmental permitting, tree relocation, and wetland plantings for the East Course redevelopment. He has also played a key role in landscape design, tree mitigation, and irrigation planning for the 45th Street Administration Complex in Palm Beach County. Anna Erickson is a licensed Landscape Architect at Cotleur & Hearing who strives to design detailed, functional, and visually appealing spaces. Vaughan Johnson’s passion for plants and design began at 15 while working at a local greenhouse in his home state of Minnesota. An avid outdoorsman and Eagle Scout, he spent much of his youth camping and exploring nature. He later pursued a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of Minnesota, which led him to join Cotleur & Hearing’s transportation team in September 2024.
Outside of work, Vaughan enjoys weightlifting, playing piano, cultivating a variety of plants, and spending quality time with friends and family.

He is responsible for implementing intricate landscape and hardscape design. Yskins has worked on a diverse range of projects including luxury resorts, single family estates and large communities. Some of the projects Yskins has overseen include the Alton Clubhouse in Jupiter, The Towers at Biscayne Bay in Coral Gables, Berumudiana Shopping Center in Jupiter as well as luxury estate properties in Palm Beach Polo Club in Wellington, Jupiter Island, Admiral’s Cove in Jupiter and Palm Beach. Brittany McInnis joined Cotleur & Hearing as a Property Management Bookkeeper in 2023. Brittany is a native Floridian and Massachusetts hybrid; graduating from Bridgewater State University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management. Brittany works under the supervision of Financial Manager, Sandra Bruorton. As a member of the Cotleur & Hearing Team, she handles the bookkeeping and partial property management of several commercial entities across Martin and Palm Beach Counties. After taking some time off to raise her young family, Brittany is excited to once again pursue her passion in finances and management. Maegan Mikkelson joined Cotleur & Hearing in September of 2024 as a Landscape Designer, training under landscape architect and partner Erin Bolin. With a Master’s degree in Landscape Architecture and a Bachelor’s in Plant Science from the University of Florida, Maegan is dedicated to celebrating and enhancing local ecosystems.
Her passion began in 2017 when she founded the Adopt a Mangrove Foundation, where she oversaw the propagation and planting of approximately 12,000 mangrove trees in southwest Florida. Her work included organizing site planting days on Lee County’s 20/20 Conservation Land, where she planned estuary rehabilitation and wetland planting zones. Maegan also created and managed informational content for the foundation, demonstrating her commitment to community engagement and environmental education.
In May of this year, Maegan completed the Resilient Sanibel Project, a Graduate Terminal Thesis aimed at supporting the coastal element of the City of Sanibel’s Comprehensive Plan. The 2026 revision emphasizes environmental stewardship and coastal resiliency. Collaborating with the Sanibel-Captiva Conservation Foundation and as an awardee of the Pfiefer Fellowship, Maegan’s project contributes to preliminary studies of the plan, offering research-based solutions and actionable recommendations to mitigate risks from sea-level rise and preserve local coastal habitats.
Looking ahead, Maegan aims to continue contributing to projects that honor and protect Florida’s natural landscapes as she develops professionally at Cotleur & Hearing.

Rebecca Ortiz has worked in the urban planning and landscape architecture field for over 18 years, almost all of them here at Cotleur & Hearing. She is involved from the initial design development process and works directly with principal landscape architects and planners throughout the site development concept process. She produces site and landscape plans for our company and is proficient in AutoCAD. She has devoted herself to developing the look that makes our plans readable and identifiable as Cotleur & Hearing plans. Rebecca is responsible for addressing all AutoCAD related questions as they arise within our development team. Some of her most notable projects include Jupiter Medical Center, Avenir Health Park, Downtown at Palm Beach Gardens, PGA Station and so many more.

Phoebe Prentner joined Cotleur & Hearing as a landscape designer in June 2022, following her graduation from Virginia Tech with a Bachelor’s Degree in Landscape Architecture,complemented by minors in Visual Arts and Ecological Cities. She has become especially skilled in the design of large-scale community developments, site, landscape, tree disposition, and irrigation plans for projects throughout Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, St. Lucie County, Indian River County, and Vero Beach.
Phoebe is also an active member of the landscape architecture community in Florida.
She has served as chair of the ASLA Professional Design Awards Gala, Public Relations Member at Large, and participated in several design award committees. She currently serves as the Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Section Chair for the 2024-2026 term. Phoebe’s favorite tropical plant is the vibrant Croton, whose bold, colorful leaves first caught her eye when she moved to Florida and began exploring the state’s diverse plant palette. She continues to admire how Crotons add an unmistakable burst of brightness to any landscape, embodying her belief that great design should not only be functional but also visually inspiring.

Steven Rivera has been a core member of the Cotleur & Hearing transportation team since September 2019, bringing over a decade of experience in landscape design and environmental sciences. His work is driven by a deep passion for the creation of inspiring, functional, and sustainable outdoor spaces that enhance the human experience. Steven Rivera holds a bachelor’s degree in urban and Regional Planning from Florida Atlantic University and holds a certification as an ISA Arborist. Specializing in both landscape design and irrigation design, he aims to assist Cotleur & Hearing promote FDOT’s goals and visions by increasing beautification and functionality of the roadways we commute on every day. His expertise in irrigation design and arboriculture ensures that every design is created uniquely and optimally based on the environmental conditions they are planted in. Whether designing a rest area, interstate interchange, street corridors or city green spaces, Steven Rivera is dedicated to creating refined and creative green spaces that reflect his love for nature, culture, and aesthetics that can last the test of time.
Steven’s favorite plant is the Black Lace Japanese Maple. It holds the maple-like form we know and love with crimson leaves that provide added darkness of a blackish-violet color in the summer that can add a tasteful contrast to any landscape. He is heavily inspired by Japanese landscapes and culture when it comes to design and image.

Ella Stone, a proud Jupiter local, began her professional journey at Cotleur & Hearing in May 2024 as a summer Planning Intern. After completing her Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Florida State University in just three years, she transitioned into a full-time role as a Planner with the firm. Working under the guidance of Project Manager George Missimer, Ella collaborates with the firm’s planning and design teams on diverse land planning projects. She assists with entitlement and permitting processes, creates GIS maps, and conducts research to support development projects.
Ella enjoys fieldwork opportunities, gaining hands-on experience that enhances her planning and environmental expertise. To further deepen her knowledge in sustainability and policy, she is pursuing a Master’s degree in Forest Resources and Conservation with a concentration in Natural Resource Policy and Administration at the University of Florida.

With a Master’s in Urban & Regional Planning and a Bachelor’s in Interdisciplinary Social Science from Florida State University, she launched her planning career in local government, gaining valuable insight into public sector operations. Her subsequent experience in business development and corporate operations further refined her strategic approach, integrating technical planning expertise with a market-informed perspective.
At Cotleur & Hearing, McKenna focuses on the zoning entitlement process for projects across Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast, managing developments from large-scale raw land projects to small-scale redevelopment and infill initiatives. In addition, she provides dedicated due diligence services, delivering comprehensive assessments that help developers navigate complex site evaluations and advance their visionary projects.
Driven by her passion for improving societal conditions through balanced development approaches, McKenna is committed to overcoming the challenges posed by complex land use issues. An expert in GIS mapping and community engagement, she also leverages these tools to drive innovative solutions for Cotleur & Hearing’s private and public sector clients. Her graduate capstone project won awards from the Florida Redevelopment Association and the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association.
A native of Martin County, McKenna also enjoys traveling and exploring diverse cities, always seeking inspiration from the unique character of each place. Her forward-thinking approach and deep-rooted commitment to her community continue to shape her dynamic contributions to the field. She also serves as the Communications Officer for the Treasure Coast Section of the Florida Chapter of the American Planning Association.
