Plant of the Month – Novemeber 2024

Hurricane Palm

Dictyosperma album

After the rainy hurricane season, November’s plant of the month celebrates a resilient palm, well-adapted to withstand South Florida’s recent storms. The Hurricane Palm, endemic to the Mascarene Islands in the Indian Ocean, is accustomed to humid, tropical environments, making it a suitable selection for South Florida’s Zones 10-11. Its high salt tolerance and preference for moist soil allow it to live vibrantly along the coast. The palm’s durability in heavy storms comes from its unique ability to shed its long, feathery fronds. When hit by strong winds, the fronds break away cleanly, preventing damage to the trunk and allowing the tree to recover quickly. Despite its strength in our landscapes, the Hurricane Palm is critically endangered in its native habitat due to over-farming.

There are several varieties within the species, but all share the same adaptability and striking appearance. Its elegant, arching crown gives it the nickname “Princess Palm,” while its short, stout trunk, adorned with faint rings, provides a sturdy base. The differences in each variety are among the colors of the crown shaft. It is a popular choice for coastal gardens, often used as a striking accent or to line pathways and driveways. The Hurricane Palm’s beauty and adaptability make it a perfect choice for enhancing South Florida landscapes, combining elegance and durability.
